THE SLEEPING BAG MURDERS

Isla Vista beach in California has a long history. It is an area close to the campus of the University of Santa Barbara, where Aldous Huxley had been a guest, already a protagonist of psychdelic experiences in the hills of Los Angeles. The trail of drug addicts must be fully followed, as in 1969 Andy Warhol's ex-partner (Edie Sedgwick) went to live there attracted by toxic methamphetamines. It is also said that Jim Morrison's song “The Crystal Ship” by The Doors was written following a psychedelic experience on that beach (source: https://sites.me.ucsb.edu/~beltz/sb_article. pdf) In 1970 the area was the scene of student riots against the Bank of America, complete with an arson that would have been orchestrated as part of the federal operation COINTELPRO, in an affair that involved Masons of Skull & Bones such as William F. Buckley.On the night of July 4-5, 1970, 3 boys camped on the beach with their sleeping bags after watching the fireworks display in San Francisco's Candlestick Park. They were Thomas M. Hayes, Tommy Dolan and Homer Shadwick. As reported by https://www.zodiacciphers.com/the-sleeping-bag-murders.html, Shadwick was holding Larry Steve Hess' identity documents. It is not clear how the exchange took place, it seems for a plot that would have allowed Shadwick to avoid military service at the Fort Lewis base in Washington, so according to the Dante's retaliation law he was killed by a commando in which a soldier was present. He was named Ulysses, as the protagonist character of Homer's Odyssey. Victims were attacked with stabbed weapons while in sleeping bags, Hayes is the only one to survive the ambush and in 1974 sued in court the people who had allowed them to sleep there, but ultimately failed to get a favorable verdict (source: https://casetext.com/case/hayes-v-state-of-california-2). According to media reports, Hayes would have described the attackers as 3 men: a white, a black man and an Asian named Carl who would be the 3 people who would have given a lift to the victims in the van. It could be a subliminal message to Carl described by Tony Costa, which in turn refers to Costa Gavras' film "Z: the orgy of power". The 3 men are not suspected in the official investigations and to understand more we must start with the fireworks. The anniversary is Independence Day and also exactly one year after the Blue Rock Springs events, so the Zodiac group needed to get some blood flowing again. Candlestick Point carries the references to candles already seen in the case of the Candlelight Killer, it is also located south of Hunters Point and north of Sierra Point in Brisbane, the same name of a well-known Australian location. There is therefore a link to the Carol Ann Hill murder, the Crawford family massacre in Australia and the future abduction of Donna Ann Lass. There are therefore elements to believe that the team of killers returning from Australia (time zone and flight hours permitting for Rodney Alcala, George Hill Hodel, Ulysses & Co.) was also guilty of this crime on the beach of Isla Vista. Not surprisingly, the sleeping bags do not filter water and are used when hiking in the hills, moreover the crime scene is near Cervantes Road, the street dedicated to the famous author of Don Quixote born in Alcala. Furthermore, the reference to the beach could be inspired by the related painting by Renato Guttuso, as well as by the numerous previous crimes on the beaches, including the most recent one with Sandra Garcia and Franklin Hood as the victims. Even in that case, the Santa Barbara factor appeared, with Hodel striking where there were houses designed by architect George Washington Smith. The sleeping bag recalls the murder of Terry Bowers committed in April 1970, while it is interesting to note that the Isla Vista crime scene is near the Lagoon campus (partial reference to the concealment of the body of Leona Roberts) and the labyrinth of the Lagoon Island. As reported by former super-policeman Steve Hodel in "Most Evil", the labyrinth in Greek mythology was built by Deadalus for King Minos to imprison the Minotaur. Considering the reference to Count Zaroff and the Minotaur of the Rosicrucian Salvador Dali used by George Hodel to place Elizabeth Short's corpse in a ritual manner and the fact that Hodel's daughter (Tamar Nais) was dating Jim Morrison, it is quite strange to realize that the labyrinth is it was only inaugurated in the 2000s. Following the Sedgwick track, it is interesting to note that at the time she was working at times on the film “Hello! Manhattan ”with John Palmer. The surname is the same as the name of the Chicago hotel where Evelyn Okubo was allegedly murdered in Monroe Street on July 17, while Ranko Carol Yamada managed to survive the ambush. It is also reported that Sedgwick descended from the families of the first colonizers of the United States and had been engaged between 1962 and 1963 to a Harvard student and had gone to live in Cambdridge in 1963, studying sculpture with her cousin Lilly Saarinen. This can be traced back to sculptor William Spencer and the Harvard boys involved in the Boston strangler murders at the time and members of the Zodiac group. The common thread between Warhol and Hodel was the Seconal, the favorite barbiturate of the professional killer. As reported by https://www.artforum.com/print/reviews/199903/andy-warhol-50936, Warhol portrayed Marilyn Monroe (who died of an overdose of Seconal) and made Sedgwick play Lupe Velez including an overdose of Seconal, which occured at 732 North Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, inspired by Satanist director Kenneth Anger, as reported by https://warholstars.org/filmch/lupe.html. It is therefore not surprising that according to Dante's law of retaliation, Sedgwick died on November 16, 1971 of an overdose of barbiturates and is buried at the Oak Hill cemetery (source: https://it.findagrave.com/memorial / 5319 / edie-sedgwick). As is often the case, you investigate one crime and discover others committed by Hodel at the same juncture. La spiaggia di Isla Vista in California ha una lunga storia alle spalle. Si tratta di una zona a ridosso del campus dell’università di Santa Barbara, dove era stato ospite Aldous Huxley, già protagonista di esperienze psichdeliche nelle colline di Los Angeles. La pista dei tossicodipendenti va seguita appieno, in quanto nel 1969 l’ex compagna di Andy Warhol (Edie Sedgwick) era andata a vivere lì attratta dalle tossiche metanfetamine. Si narra anche che la canzone “The Crystal Ship” dei The Doors di Jim Morrison sia stata scritta in seguito ad un’esperienza psichedelica su quella spiaggia (fonte: https://sites.me.ucsb.edu/~beltz/sb_article.pdf ).Nel 1970 la zona è stata teatro di rivolte studentesche contro la Bank of America, con tanto di incendio che sarebbe stato orchestrato nell’ambito dell’operazione federale COINTELPRO, in una vicenda che ha interessato massoni della Skull & Bones come William F. Buckley.Nella notte fra il 4 ed il 5 luglio 1970, 3 ragazzi si sono accampati nella spiaggia con i propri sacchi a pelo dopo aver visto i fuochi d’artificio nel Candlestick Park a San Francisco. Si tratta di Thomas M. Hayes,  Tommy Dolan e Homer Shadwick. Come riportato da https://www.zodiacciphers.com/the-sleeping-bag-murders.html , Shadwick aveva in mano dei documenti d’identità di Larry Steve Hess. Non è chiaro come lo scambio sia avvenuto, sembra per un escamotage che avrebbe permesso a Shadwick di evitare il servizio militare nella base di Fort Lewis a Washington, quindi per la legge dantesca del contrappasso è stato ucciso da un commando in cui era presente un militare di nome Ulisse, come il personaggio protagonista dell’Odissea di Omero (Homer). Le vittime sono state aggredite con armi da taglio mentre erano nei sacchi a pelo, Hayes è l’unico a sopravvivere all’agguato e nel 1974 cita in giudizio in tribunale chi aveva concesso loro di dormire lì, ma alla fine non riesce ad ottenere un verdetto favorevole (fonte: https://casetext.com/case/hayes-v-state-of-california-2 ). In base a quanto riportato dai media, Hayes avrebbe descritto gli aggressori in 3 uomini: un bianco, un uomo di colore ed un asiatico di nome Carl che sarebbero i 3 che avrebbero dato un passaggio alle vittime col furgone. Potrebbe essere un messagio subliminale al Carl descritto da Tony Costa, che a sua volta rimanda al film di Costa Gavras “Z: l’orgia del potere”. I 3 uomini non vengono sospettati nelle indagini ufficiali e per capirne di più dobbiamo partire dai fuochi d’artificio. La ricorrenza è la festa dell’Indipendenza e pure un anno esatto dai fatti di Blue Rock Springs, quindi il gruppo Zodiac aveva bisogno di far scorrere nuovamente del sangue. Candlestick Point porta i riferimenti alle candele già visti nel caso del Candlelight Killer, inoltre si trova a sud di Hunters Point e a nord di Sierra Point a Brisbane, stesso nome di una nota località australiana. Si può quindi notare un collegamento con l’omicido di Carol Ann Hill, con il massacro della famiglia Crawford in Australia e con il futuro rapimento di Donna Ann Lass. Ci sono elementi per ritenere quindi che la squadra di killer di ritorno dall’Australia (fuso orario e ore di volo permettendo per Rodney Alcala, George Hill Hodel, Ulisse & Co.) si sia macchiata anche di questo delitto sulla spiaggia di Isla Vista. Non a caso, i sacchi a pelo non filtrano acqua e vengono utilizzati durante le escursioni in collina, inoltre la scena del crimine è nei pressi di Cervantes Road, la via dedicata al celebre autore di Don Chisciotte nato ad Alcala. Inoltre, il riferimento alla spiaggia potrebbe essere ispirato dal relativo quadro di Renato Guttuso, oltre che dai numerosi delitti precedenti sulle spiagge, compreso quello più recente con vittime Sandra Garcia e Franklin Hood. Anche in quel caso compariva infatti il fattore Santa Barbara, con Hodel che colpiva laddove c’erano abitazioni progettate dall’architetto George Washington Smith. Il sacco a pelo richiama l’omicidio di Terry Bowers commesso ad aprile 1970, mentre è interessante notare come la scena del crimine di Isla Vista sia nei pressi del campus Lagoon (riferimento parziale all’occultamento del corpo di Leona Roberts) e del labirinto dell’isola Lagoon. Come riportato dall’ex superpoliziotto Steve Hodel in “Most Evil”, il labirinto nella mitologia greca era stato fatto costruire a Deadalus dal re Minosse per imprigionare il Minotauro.  Considerando il riferimento al conte Zaroff e al Minotauro del rosacroce Salvador Dalì usato da George Hodel per posizionare il cadavere di Elizabeth Short in maniera rituale ed il fatto che la figlia di Hodel (Tamar Nais) frequentava Jim Morrison, è strano realizzare che il labirinto sia stato inaugurato soltanto negli anni 2000. Seguendo invece la pista Sedgwick, è interessante notare che all’epoca stava lavorando a tratti al film “Ciao! Manhattan” con John Palmer. Il cognome è il medesimo del nome dell’hotel di Chicago in cui il 17 luglio sarebbe stata assassinata Evelyn Okubo nella strda Monroe, mentre Ranko Carol Yamada era riuscita a sopravvivere all’agguato. Viene inoltre riportato che la Sedgwick era  discendente delle famiglie dei primi colonizzatori degli Stati Uniti ed era stata fidanzata fra il 1962 ed il 1963 con uno studente di Harvard ed era andata a vivere a Cambdridge nel 1963, studiando sculture con la cugina Lilly Saarinen. Ciò si può ricollegare allo scultore William Spencer e ai ragazzi di Harvard coinvolti nei delitti dello strangolatore di Boston in quel periodo e membri del gruppo Zodiac. Il filo conduttore fra Warhol e Hodel era il Seconal, il barbiturico preferito dal killer professionista. Come riportato da https://www.artforum.com/print/reviews/199903/andy-warhol-50936 , Warhol ha ritratto infatti Marilyn Monroe (morta per overdose di Seconal) e ha fatto interpretare Lupe Velez alla Sedgwick overdose di Seconal compresa al 732 di North Rodeo Drive a Beverly Hills, ispirata dal regista satanista Kenneth Anger, come riportato da https://warholstars.org/filmch/lupe.html . Non c’è da stupirsi quindi se per la legge dantesca del contrappasso, la Sedgwick sia morta il 16 novembre 1971 per overdose di barbiturici ed è sepolta presso il cimitero di Oak Hill (fonte: https://it.findagrave.com/memorial/5319/edie-sedgwick ). Come spesso accade, indaghi su un crimine e ne scopri altri di Hodel nello stesso frangente. Da notare anche che, come riportato da https://www.websleuths.com/forums/threads/alcala-connection-to-andy-warhol.184005/ , è probabile che Alcala abbia appreso le proprie abilità di fotografo da Warhol stesso.
